Tech firms make strong showing
in Colorado 'Companies To Watch'

Colorado tech companies made a strong showing in this year’s “Colorado Companies to Watch” competition, an awards program honoring small and mid-sized companies that demonstrate strong marketplace performance and innovative products or processes.

Of 50 winners, 11 are involved in technology-related activities, including information technology and computer systems design and related services. The winners were announced at an awards ceremony in downtown Denver June 28.

The Colorado Companies to Watch Program was developed five years ago by the Edward Lowe Foundation. To qualify, nominees must be Colorado-based companies with six to 99 full-time employees and must have between $750,000 and $50 million in sales or access to capital. Program officials say this year’s winners were chosen from among 800 nominees.

Many of the tech firm winners are relatively young companies, founded since the year 2000. The oldest tech-related winner is Denver-based PEAK Resources, Inc., which was founded in 1991; the youngest is Airborne Media Group of Durango, started just two years ago in 2011.

Program representatives boast that the 2013 winners have had a powerful impact on the economy. Together, the 50 winners represented $410 million in total annual revenue in 2012, a 52 percent increase over their combined revenue the previous year. The companies were also responsible for 1,417 full-time equivalent employees (1,255 in Colorado and 162 out of state) and expect to create 460 net new jobs in 2013 (364 in Colorado and 96 out of state).
